History: The JNR 9600 was the first class of locomotives to evolve from a new Japanese Railways equipment procurement policy which required not only larger locomotives, but also production entirely by Japanese manufacturers. Unique design features of the 9600 class were a wider than usual firebox, resting on the main frame rather than fitting between the frame rails. This allowed more generation of steam and the ability to convert the wheel gauge to either operate on JNR narrow gauge track of 1067mm, or JNR standard gauge of  1485mm. This new locomotive profile displayed a shorter smoke stack and domes which resulted in a more powerful and sturdy appearance, somewhat reminiscent of contemporary German locomotives. A total of 770 units were produced during the period from 1918 to1926. The class 9600 operated throughout Japan except on Shikoku Island. About 250 standard gauge class 9600 locomotives were delivered to occupied China. After the war they remained in mainland China & Taiwan. In Japan, the 9600 series remained in service until 1975, working branch lines on Hokkaido and Kyushu Islands.

The JNR 9600 series is modeled in 1/30 scale like all other Japanese National Railways locomotives.
